Frédéric Malempré started percussion at age 7 playing the Tapan. Between 1979 and 1983, he studied drumming with Yves Baibay and André Charlier. From 1983 until 1990, he attended Afro-Cuban and Cuban workshops run by Gomma Percussions as well as sessions at the Neufchâteau summer academy with Chris Joris, Franck Michiels and Didier Labarre. In 1989, he took part in the Libramont jazz session with Jean-Louis Rassinfosse. He still seeks out new sounds that he shares with groups in different styles: jazz, world music, folk, chanson française, Italian pop, young audiences, early and classical music…
In jazz, he has notably toured with many groups: MusicAzur (Pirly Zurstrassen), Musique à Neuf, Brownie Speaks (Big band de Rob Bruynen, Hollande), Chris Joris Experience, Hermosa (Allemagne). In “chanson française” : Marka, Wendy Nazaré, Gerry Lippman, Thierry Dell. In “world music” : Het Muziek Lod (« La Maison des petites musiques cachées »), Bernard l’Hoir, Perles d’Amour et Oblomow, Karoline de la Serna. In Folk music : Didier Laloy invites, [PÔ-Z]s. En musique classique et ancienne : Quatuor Héliotrope, Zefiro Torna, Luthomania. In “Young public” : Raphy Rafaël, Chant’âges, Grouba4. He played as well occasionally for P.A.R.T.S. dance school (Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker) and in different bands with Jan de Haas, Yvan Paduart, Nathalie Loriers, Benoit Vanderstraten, Roman Korolik, Mimi Verderamme, Philippe Aert, Bruno Castellucci
