The word “méteque” (metic) refers to an intermediate status as a citizen and a foreigner in ancient Greece, reserved for Greek nationals from other cities. It has no pejorative connotations, unlike its contemporary use in French. The Greeks differentiate between the “metic”, a resident foreigner, from the transient foreigner, who has no rights. The passing foreigner could become “metic” after one month of residence.
