Since her first release (“Dance with Angels”) published by Igloo in 2019, Anne Wolf’s quartet has toured (despite the health crisis) and acquired a beautiful mature sound. It is probably the original line-up that gives the group such a singular sound: the piano trio with acoustic bass guitar (Theo de Jong) and drums (Lionel Beuvens) is enriched by the classical playing of the cellist Sigrid Vandenbogaerde. By turns, she plays the main themes or punctuates, with a bow or pizzicato, the themes and improvisations of the three other musicians.
“Kahane’s Walk in Kalahari” is the title track of the new digital EP. It transposes the emotional state of the pianist following an intimate solo concert by the American artist Gabriel Kahane in a small club in Amsterdam. A piece that distills its many musical influences (classical, African and Brazilian).
“Impasse-temps”, the second title, was composed during one of the last lockdowns imposed by the health crisis and recounts these painfully calm frozen moments, that unfortunately saw the development of a new type of segregation, that the pianist deplores. A piece clearly influenced by current masters of jazz piano such as Brad Mehldau or Aaron Parks.
Anne Wolf quartet brings together four musicians with noted careers. Present on more than 200 albums, they have played with big names in music scene such as Toots Thielemans, Maurane, Philip Catherine, Marcia Maria, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Philippe Lafontaine, Vaya Con Dios, Tineke Postma, David Linx and Paolo Fresu…
