Nominated for Django d’or in 2006 and Sabam Jazz Awards in 2011 and 2013, Lorenzo Di Maio has played on most of the Belgian and a great number of European stages alongside musicians of the calibre of Jacques Pirotton, Sal La Rocca, Jos Machtel, Nathalie Loriers, Jacques Schwarz Bart, Fabrice Alleman, Hans Van Oosterhout and Dré Pallemaerts. So now is the time to present his first project as a bandleader: Lorenzo Di Maio – Black Rainbow.
Inspired by musicians of his generation such as Brian Blade and the Fellowships, Ambrose Akinmusire or even Aaron Parks, the guitarist Lorenzo Di Maio invites us into his introspective and poetic world. His music runs through a wide range of emotions and images, like different states of mind.
For the occasion, the guitarist put together a powerful team that serves music punctuated by delicate arrangements and a firm aesthetic feel that owes a lot to the subtle balance between the five musicians. In this space where playing is freedom, the various influences meet and are channeled.
Black Rainbow serves up a genuine reinterpretation of the Blues and Saudade, music in which nostalgia and hope are just one breath away from each other.
“Lorenzo Di Maio’s music swings between contemplation and vivacity, yet always transpires with humanity and unfeigned feelings. The music is in his image, modest and true.” (J. Prouvost)
