These two singers are heirs and bearers of the magnificent tradition of Sicilian carter songs.
Giovanni Di Salvo learned from his grandfather Domenico Lanza, one of the greatest singers from Bagheria (Sicily) who was also recorded by Alan Lomax and appears on the disc “Italian Treasury: Sicily” (Rounder, The Alan Lomax Collection). A student at the University of Palermo, he collaborated intensively on the album “Canzuna a la Carrittera” and works intensely to maintain and disseminate these little-known songs.
Melchiorre Di Salvo is also from Bagheria, his more melismatic style is characteristic, he learned from his father who ran an inn (a funnacu) where the carters from Bagheria and the region liked to meet. He is the initiator of numerous projects around carters’ songs including the “Scrusciu di la Vuci”.
