Giovanna Marini's work is characterised by an original and dynamic blend of classic and popular culture which combines the surprising richness of her country's traditional music with modern elements taken from highbrow music. In 1988, Thierry Salmon asked Giovanna Marini to "compose" music for Euripide's tragedy "The Trojans" (recorded for Igloo, IGL 076).
In 1996, for Franz Marijnen's version of "The Oresteia" (Flemish Royal Theatre), the Italian composer Giovanna Marini wrote the choral parts based on the texts in Ancient Greek for Aeschylus' original. The songs are performed by a choir of young singers that has been put together for the circumstances. Giovanna Marini's score gives the texts of the choir a direct yet lyrical strength of expression, as well as the authentic emotion of the human voice.
