Pascal Mohy Trio
Unless its innate to him, Pascal Mohy learnt to handle his emotions and above all to expose them with pertinence and talent. He combines sensitivity and intelligence with grace and dexterity. There is nothing demonstrative about him. Modesty before anything else. And depth above all. It’s only normal that at the head of his new trio, Pascal Mohy easily finds a balance between tradition and modernity. For his first album as a leader, the standards naturally embrace original compositions… and vice versa.
Pascal Mohy, 31 years old in the year 2011, could have lived 75 years ago. Or even more. His romantic air echoes the spirit of freedom of a young Berlioz or Hugo with an added flash of humour in his eye and a breezy smile. His music, however, is directly linked to the racy elegance of Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn and Count Basie. It’s no accident that his 2008 album “Automne 08” features a version of “Prelude to a Kiss” by the Duke. But Pascal is not stuck in the sophisticated thirties. His piano playing also embraces musical touches from Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane and he readily listens to Jarrett and Mehldau. Influences, not strict models. Pascal Mohy has been able to develop a personal, contemporary style, not fearing to twist melodies and harmonies to extract the best juice while staying classy and refined. In melancholy as in happiness, with enthusiasm and distinction, Pascal Mohy goes deep inside to find music that talks as much to the heart as to the mind. Without vain brilliance or demonstrations. His piano is not a cir- cus instrument; it is how he shares his emotions.
