After more than a quarter century of existence, and after exploring a (small) part of the vast repertoire of French chanson through 8 albums, the Ame des Poètes trio wanted to approach this new album from a slightly different angle. The starting point is the song "Le méteque (The Wop)" by Georges Moustaki.
What would the French chanson be without Georges Moustaki, Yves Montand, Henri Salvador, Josephine Baker, Louis Chedid, Charles Aznavour, Dick Annegarn, Dalida, Joe Dassin, Léo Ferré or Beau Dommage? There are so many more!
The word "méteque" (metic) refers to an intermediate status as a citizen and a foreigner in ancient Greece, reserved for Greek nationals from other cities. It has no pejorative connotations, unlike its contemporary use in French. The Greeks differentiate between the "metic", a resident foreigner, from the transient foreigner, who has no rights. The passing foreigner could become "metic" after one month of residence.
The great tradition of French-language song has often been built by magnificent "metics" in the noble and ancient sense of the word. This repertoire celebrates not only diversity, but above all a fine line-up of great songwriters and performers. ADP pay tribute to them by interpreting some of their unforgettable and essential works in their own way.
