Jean-Pierre Gebler
Born in Uccle in 1938, Jean-Pierre Gebler was considered as one of the best baritone saxophonists in Europe. He also excelled at the piano and has made numerous recordings on both instruments. Jacques Pelzer was one of the first to believe in him recorded him with trumpeter Snowy Struvay album “Jazz in Little Belgium”. In 1954, he worked with Jack Sels while attending classes at the Conservatory of Lille. Seen in Brussels clubs such as The Black Rose and Ramses II. At the international tournament of the Hot Club of Belgium, he won the cup for best saxophonist. Noticed by Bobby Jaspar, he went to Paris to play with Barney Wilen, René Urtreger, Jean-Louis Viale and the great Chet Baker.
In Madrid, he plays with the Catalan pianist Tete Montoliu and American bassist Chuck Israel. He returned to Belgium to give 67 concerts with Dexter Gordon and returned to Portugal to accompany his master Gerry Mulligan. Then, he left the music scene only to reappear ten years later and recorded a series of albums. He mounted a quintet with Jacques Pirotton, Jan De Haas, Philippe Aerts and Michael Blass. We saw him for the last couple of weeks ago at the Jazz Club in Liege Jacques Pelzer for a tribute to the trumpeter Snowy Struvay.
