The album title, The Spirit of the Valley, refers to an ancient Chinese philosophical poem.The Spirit of the Valley defines the nature of that emptiness, which opens the gates to freedom in music. Because it's in this emptiness that imagination takes control of spontaneity and that musicians exchange their ideas and their energy. Therefore, as the Chinese poem says so aptly about the Spirit of the Valley: use will never drain it.
Manu Hermia makes the link between a desire for staying attached to a certain jazz tradition and the will to find a personal voice at the same time.The alto sax is here seeking out a new sound, a new language and a new path which are directly inspired by big tenors, more specifically John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter. The arrangements and playing reflect a deep desire to escape from what has already been written. Thus the arrangements are here limited to the structures and to the general spirit of the compositions, always leaving room for the player's spontaneity.
